Why?
1) AD was exactly like having another player on Dline due to his elite skills.
2) I don't believe this roster has the best talent to stuff the run (with a 3-4 base) and everyone knows to run right at us after the first four weeks.
3) Who would I start upfront? Verse at RDE (I know he's missed several tackles, but he really does dominate when they run right at him; Turner and Fiske at DT; and Hoeght at LDE. Our two lber starters now compete for the middle backer spot, at olber I'd start Young at R backer (due to his elite speed for blitzes); and Speight at the other outside spot.
They now have 5-6 guys blocking only 3 upfront and none of ours are elite. We simply cannot expect our 3-4 base D to excel at stopping the run.
Thoughts?

Weren’t we 3-4 under? I know this was case when Phillips was DC, and it has arrangements that are 4-3.

Did we migrate away from a base 3-4?

The only thought that comes to mind is that while it might give us more pressure, or help with the run in some moments, the linebackers we have are not terribly good in coverage.

We may just have to take more risks generally.

After losing AD, I just don't see the Dline talent to play a 3 man front, especially when we rank 31st in run D. You really need an elite DT or NT to be successful in a 3-4 and this roster has neither. I really like all of our young Dlinemen, I just think with their talents we should be in a 4-3 base primarily due to Verse's ability to take on Olinemen and more than hold his ground if he was a 4-3 DE. He has the talent to play outside in a 3-4 or 4-3. Hoeght has the talents to play as a 4-3 DE too.
