I know it’s off season and guys don’t have anything else to talk about and I know that we have the ultimate scoreboard so I shouldn’t care but I was listening to some local radio guys ranking qbs. They started with franchise guys and you can imagine the list, Mahomes, Herbert, Rodgers, Wilson, but there was indecision about Stafford. Even though he won a ring is he a franchise guy? So now I’m yelling at my radio, “this ain’t no Trent Dilfer situation, they don’t win the nfcc or the SB without Stafford!”
But doesn’t a franchise guy have to be with the team for a while like Rodgers? “So now we’re just making up rules that exclude Stafford even though Brady and Wilson just got to their teams?”
Clearly people had an opinion of Stafford that even winning a super bowl isn’t going to change, the perception is that he’s not on the same level as Rodgers or Brady despite what their playoff performances might suggest.
Ok, rant over, back to enjoying life as defending super bowl champs!

Theses “talking heads” should watch a cut up of all of Staffs no look passes, and how many times he hung in the pocket to get smoked immediately after delivering the ball in target, how many times he played hurt for his teammates - in Detroit and so far in LA. What a fucking joke. Dude is a nails as they come. We won the SB based on Staff Being a “franchise guy”. No Staff, No Ring.

PERIOD.

The case for Stafford used to be based on stats.

The criticism was that he never won when it mattered.

The retort was he never had a complete team around him.

Last year, the debate ended.

He’s a franchise QB.

He was drafted #1 to be the Lions franchise QB and he was for 12 years. He got that pitiful franchise to the postseason 3 times. Winning the SB doesn't make you a franchise QB. It makes you a Champion. Archie Manning and Dan Marino were considered franchise QBs. They were never considered Champions. That's where talking heads get it wrong.

Over the years Russell Wilson was a better quarterback than Stafford. Today I take Stafford over Wilson and it isn't close. Herbert looks to have a bright future but his teams so far just don't win enough games. Why is that?

Sure, take Rogers and Brady over Stafford. They both had great seasons. Take Mahomes. He's both elite and young. So is Josh Allen. Stafford is a true franchise guy himself. When you need a game winning drive with two minutes he's as good as any of those others in my opinion. So yeah, he's a franchise quarterback.

What is a definition of a "franchise" QB? To me, that's a QB who consistently performs at a high level, who the team willingly commits to a long-term, high value contract, and one who can lead the team to the "promised land", e.g. a Superbowl win.

Matthew Stafford checks all those boxes, so what's the argument? :roll2:

The only thing that wouldn't make Stafford a franchise QB for the Rams is his age. Is he gonna be our guy for 10 years?

Probably not...

Sure Rodgers and Brady had great years but how’d they do in the playoffs? Brady played terrible til the rams let him back in the game with some short fields and Rodgers laid a big fat egg vs the 9ers, meanwhile Stafford brought the rams from behind in every game on his way to a ring. The perception is that Rodgers and Brady are so much better but for this year anyway that doesn’t seem accurate.
