So many pundits are calling us SB contenders now, but will our team resemble itself after free agency?

Resemble itself? Let's hope not offensively. My hopes are high for them. I can't get my hopes too high for the defense. How often has a team finished #1, changed coordinators (from outside the org) and resembled itself? I bet they have (the Ravens?), but I can't be sure. Of course with a guy like AD leading them, it's possible.

A healthy AD and JL under contract is the only resemblance they need. Those two elevate anyone else on defense. It would be nice if we could replace everyone but I doubt Morris will run exactly the same defense Staley did so it isn't necessary.

At least from my view. Maybe people that follow defense more closely could illustrate what Staley did that was so unique that Morris can't replicate? What Staley was doing scheme wise or playcalling wise that made the defense so good?

It's simplistic, I know, but to me it was just AD disrupting the opposition, JL shutting down their best receiver and everyone else making plays off of that.

JL, Justin Lawler? I know, Ramsey.
Perhaps. But if Floyd, DWill, JJ, Brockers and to a lesser degree Ebukam, Hill etc depart, that's almost half our players plus the coordinator.
Staley seemed good at adjusting in game and at half time. At least willing to unlike Phillips who didn't seem to. I'm hoping Morris leans more towards Staley approach and abilities.

It's going to be a strange year with the cap being lower. There's only so much money to go around and not every guy will get that "once in a lifetime deal". Maybe some of them lean more towards a 2 or 3 year deal to stay and then get that big deal elsewhere. But we're not going to resemble the 2020 Rams D. It's really hard to repeat as #1 D and though they don't have to do that, being top 10 should be fine.

Poor Jared Goff... Detroit is now 31 out of 32, and the world is offcially not fair to Jared again. One year you're learning which direction the sun rises from, the next you're cast into Motown 6 month winters. I do feel for him though. At least he has more manageable expectations to go with those tens of millions of dollars. I would be very happy wiping away my tears with that.

Well, Jared just traded place with Matthew.

So this year we can do a fair comparison, right?

Kinda off topic, but I haven't seen this here - former Colts punter Pat McAfee on his YouTube channel.... interesting perspective.

Sounds like Colts thought they’d were in the running for Stafford, until Rams unloaded the bomb, the 2nd first rounder. We don’t get Stafford otherwise.

Ya. Staying the #1 D after losing the DC and a number of starters/high contributing players is going to have an effect. However, bc every team is dealing with a low cap, that affects the value of players relative to 2021. No one can really get paid except by a team that is waaaay under the cap. And those teams are typically the shitty ones. So perhaps a new DC, modified scheme, and hopefully being able to get new players who fit that scheme, we can stay top 5.

We are good on O if we do nothing as MS should be able to deal with the “skills” of the OL better than Goff did. But, they do have the draft as well as younger players they have been developing - even if they don’t sign any or very few FAs - to restock the D and provide comp on the OL. With potential restructures, the draft and lower market prices for a lot of FAs, we might be ok.
