The NFL vet minimum would be around $750k.http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/2407 ... -contractsPlayers in new league to get 3-year, $250K contractsJul 12, 2018Darren RovellLess than eight months before the scheduled start of its new pro league, the Alliance of American Football has rolled out details about player allocation, a combine, a draft and salary expectations.League co-founder Bill Polian, an ESPN NFL analyst, said the league will give players three-year, non-guaranteed contracts worth $250,000 each.Players can leave the league, which is set to kick off Feb. 9, to go to the NFL. Polian said it's currently unclear whether a player's rights will revert back to the AAF after a three-year period expires or if the clock stops ticking on a team's three-year rights when a player gets "called up" to the big time.Salaries will be in line with AAF competitor the XFL, which has said it will pay players an average of $75,000 per season. That league launches in 2020.Polian said a contract will include state-of-the-industry health insurance and an education stipend to any player who completes a year in the league. The AAF will scout players who don't make NFL and CFL teams. They will be allocated to rosters based primarily on where they played college, if there is an AAF team within a reasonable radius. When that isn't the case -- which will often be true for players from the Big Ten and the Big 12 -- players will be allocated based on their most recent NFL or CFL team.Players whose college doesn't have an AAF affiliation and who haven't played in the NFL or CFL are eligible to be tendered a contract by any team."Each of our teams will have at least five colleges whose players become theirs, four designated NFL teams and a CFL team that is assigned," Polian said.Polian said modeling suggested that this format would lead to a competitive league, taking into account that the Birmingham team, for example, wouldn't be loaded with Alabama players because many of those players actually make the NFL. The one exception the league has made is for quarterbacks: Teams can only take one former college quarterback in their region.Polian said the college model will have immediate business implications for the teams."If the Birmingham teams has Trent Richardson, we think that will be something that would be a significant gate attraction," Polian said. The league will hold three combines next month -- in Los Angeles, Houston and Atlanta. Players who want to try out will be charged $175.The AAF has teams in Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Orlando, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and San Diego. Coaches include Steve Spurrier (Orlando), Brad Childress (Atlanta) and Mike Singletary (Memphis). Tickets are available here. Then there is the San Diego State connection, with eight Fleet having played their collegiate games at the Stadium for the Aztecs, all returning for this next chapter of their pro careers on familiar ground. But the biggest homecoming of all belongs to the head coach. Mike Martz grew up in San Diego. His love for the Aztecs was total, his admiration for then-head coach Don Coryell overflowing. It was the teachings of Coryell and another San Diego coaching legend, Sid Gillman, that Martz will bring back to SDCCU Stadium on Sunday as coach of the Fleet. Martz’s offense, so celebrated as coach of the St. Louis Rams, is equal parts the philosophies of Gillman and Coryell.“It’s always been so important for me to stay in touch with the roots of this game, the heritage, and honor those guys because of the impact they’ve had on all of us,” Martz said.As a Madison High School fullback and linebacker in the 1960s, Martz dreamed of playing for Coryell inside San Diego Stadium, as it was known then.Martz even chose an Aztecs game in 1968 as the backdrop for a first date with a fellow Madison High senior named Julie. Must have been a good game. They were married in 1971. More than 50 years later, Martz can tell you exactly where inside the stadium they sat.“Behind the Aztec bench on the 50-yard line about halfway up on the right side of the aisle,” Martz said. But Julie had competition for Martz’s affection back then. Martz had another serious passion: The Don Coryell offense. “Enamored,” is the way Martz described his feelings for the way Coryell coached the Aztecs, so much so that Martz made playing for San Diego State his primary mission in high school.“I wanted to play for him in the worst way,” Martz said. “When I left junior college, six of our guys went to San Diego State and I didn’t get offered. That was my dream, to play for Coryell in that offense. I wasn’t good enough. I was small, slow and a lot of other things. Other than that, I was pretty good.”What Martz may have lacked as a tight end at Fresno State, he more than made up for as a coach himself. Years after Coryell took his high-powered offense from the college ranks to the pros in St. Louis with the "cardiac Cardinals" and San Diego as the leader of the Chargers’ “Air Coryell” offense in the early 1980s, Martz joined the Rams as offensive coordinator. He turned Coryell’s principles into the “Greatest Show on Turf” that overwhelmed NFL defenses en route to victory in Super Bowl XXXIV and another Super Bowl appearance two years later as head coach.“I played against Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt,” said former Steelers All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu, now The Alliance’s director of player relations. “I remember the madness of (Martz’s) passing concepts and different route combinations, let alone guarding two of the greatest route-runners in the game. Thank God it was at Heinz Field and not on the turf.”Martz said he would talk to Gillman, who coached the Chargers to the 1963 AFL championship, after every one of the Rams’ games, and the team would send Gillman game tape to look at. Martz would also invite Coryell to speak to the Rams in training camp.“Sid changed the modern passing game for everybody,” Martz said. “The passing game you see today, with the combinations you see now, that all originated with Sid Gillman. When you look at the modern passing game, the principles are Sid Gillman.“When I was with the Rams, I used to bring Don back each year to talk to our team. I always brought him back. He was way, way ahead of his time.”And now, on Sunday, it all comes full circle. The extended Martz family will be there. The legends of Gillman and Coryell will be there, too.“I’m thrilled. This is something I always dreamed of as a kid,” Martz said. “I always wanted to coach here in San Diego.” RFU Season Ticket Holder by PAC12 6 years 4 months ago Total posts: 64 Joined: Jan 14 2019 LA Coliseum Practice Squad The AAF POST #98 Elvis wrote:I created a new forum for the AAF which kicks off this weekend.
