To the extent there was a redzone issue last year, indicatons are it isn't on the qb.

Right now for the season the Rams are 54% in the RZ (counting TDs only). That's the same as last year when they were 17th, but then they weren't completely in sync in game one either (even as good as they obviously are overall).

Even TG commented on it.

Los Angeles Rams@RamsNFL
“I felt like compared to last week, we did a great job of putting the ball in the end zone, in the red zone – that’s what matters at the end of the day.” – @TG3II

That comment to me has the feel of someone who has heard and is echoing a team message. I just figure McVay saw the issue, worked on it before the season, and they will just obviously get better at this.

Now that the Rams 2 game pre-season is over, this is what we've been waiting for.

The Arz defense is better than the Oakland defense so it was a better test. That would mean the arrow is definitely trending up.

The AZ offense wasn't as much of a test as the Raiders. I still don't think the Rams were what they will be and the time is upon them now.

so the rams offense didn't dominate in the redzone last season? guess i'm just going to have to take solace in how they did per drive, i.e. once they got their hands on the ball, as in: 2nd in offensive scoring per drive, 4th in offensive tds per drive, 4th in fewest punts per drive, 11th in fewest turnovers per drive.

We don't have to take solace in anything. We can though take pride in this: you can bet McV saw an issue with RZ execution and worked on it in the off-season. You can see that kind of thing in the team's mindset. Here's McVay, Donald and Suh on improvement (not just in the RZ) :

MCVAY (after Oakland): "I thought I really hurt our football team in the red zone. ... I thought in terms of the play selection, especially in the red zone, third down as a whole, I got to be much better for our football team and those are things you have to look at yourself critically and be better for them.”

SUH: It’s only two games, we’ve only played against two teams. Even though they’re great teams, we still have a lot of work to do. It’s a good test. I still stick to us being very elite on paper but we have to continue to play week in and week out. We’re going to have different tests, especially as people understand how we play. We’re going to continue to find things that we have to work on and try and improve.”

DONALD: “I feel like we can even get better. That’s the scary thing. We just have to keep working, watch the film, break down the film and build off it....we just keep working and we can play better than we did today.”

Well, to call my own number, that quite possibly could be what's happening.

This offense is clicking on all cylinders right now. The preseason is officially over. And Goff is officially a franchise QB (whatever that means, he's it). :D

Nah yer too late. I already designated him a franchise qb last year early in the season.

8-)

We've discussed this many times and I think we feel the same way. I'm going to say it again just cause I like saying it. The problem with Goff in terms of national perceptions is that his best strengths are too subtle to make dramatic highlight vids. But he makes throws no other Rams qb has made. He has enough arm, he has a very nice quick release, he's accurate, and will sometimes throw line drives with eyes that zing to the one square inch in the universe where the receiver can make a play. To someone who isn't paying attention that's just "a completion." If you look close, it's a fine-tuned talent. And as he gets more seasoning he will do more and more of that.
