LARams_1963 liked this post from: https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2018/0 ... ruden-cal/The Raiders coach credits Goff for being as tough as he is, which is part of what makes him such a “great” quarterback.“One thing that always impressed me about Goff was how tough he was. If you go back and watch him play as a true freshman at Cal, you would be surprised that he’s even still playing football. He got destroyed. He got beat up repeatedly. I don’t even know if they won a game,” Gruden said on a conference call Wednesday. As a true freshman, Goff and the Golden Bears went 1-11. The following season, they were 5-7. The year after that, they finished 8-5 and made and won their first bowl game since 2011.Cal regressed once again in 2016 after Goff left, finishing the season 5-7 behind Davis Webb. His impact on the program can’t be overstated and Gruden knows it.“He helped bring that team to respectability and put them in a bowl game with great toughness. He has an incredible pocket presence,” the coach said. “I mean this kid can stand in there and make great throws under serious pressure. I think he’s earned the respect of his teammates and they’ve surrounded him with quite a system of football and some really talented players.”... 1 by RedAlice 6 years 3 months ago Total posts: 6663 Joined: Aug 07 2015 Seattle Hall of Fame Gruden on Goff (from 8/5) POST #2 Is this pre-game coach speak? As in: if I can I will destroy him in that pocket and show how weak I really think he is? I don't just mean physical toughness but the mental aspect as well, it's tough to just pull yourself up time and again and not start thinking about bailing early. That is the kind of stuff that gets his teammates to rally around him. I hear things like "Goff's not a leader" just because he's laid back but in my view there are different types of leaders and guys will follow the man they respect whether loud and Rah-Rah or laid back.He also has skills that makes a huge difference. I remember him gushing about goff’s toughness at Cal and how terrible his protection was, and how Goff would stand in and deliver good passes.Yeah he does sound like the old qb school stuff and that's probably his basis for saying what he said this week. 1 by snackdaddy 6 years 3 months ago Total posts: 9868 Joined: May 30 2015 Merced California Hall of Fame Re: Gruden on Goff (from 9/5) POST #9 I think there is something to Goff's toughness. Some guys have a knack for absorbing hits without serious injury. Russell Wilson isn't very big. He's been sacked a lot and taken a whole bunch of hits. And he's never missed a game. I think Goff is like that.
