Local organization says majority of taxpayers oppose new stadium

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - The 15th Ward Democrats, a local ward organization, said they conducted a recent poll of St. Louis City voters discussing the sentiment toward the proposed riverfront stadium for the St. Louis Rams and the majority of voters oppose a taxpayer funded stadium.

According to the organization, they contacted 710 respondents and once verifying they were registered voters asked, “Should city taxpayer dollars be used to pay for a new NFL stadium?” The results showed 563 people answered they were opposed to the public funding and 147 in favor – breaking down to 79 percent against and 21 percent for.

“While we suspected that opposition to the stadium was broad, we were surprised by the staggering amount of voter opposition to the stadium deal,” said 15th Ward Democrats President Richard Buthod. “There isn’t a single city ward where support outpaced opposition.”

The 15th Ward Democrats will hold a press conference Tuesday at 10 a.m. in front of St. Louis City Hall to ask city leaders to support Board Bill 207 that would call for voters to decide whether public funds should be used.

“This polling shows that St. Louis’ taxpayers have a simple message for our elected officials,” Buthod added, “Turn the funding proposal down or send it to the ballot. The people deserve a vote, plain and simple.”

Jesus, 80%?! That can't be right, something must have been screwy, you can't get 80% of the population to agree that winning a billion dollars is awesome.

And all the while they're blaming the NFL for not "allowing" them to hold a public vote. They know they'd lose the vote that's why the aren't holding one.

That's probably a valid observation.

It's likely not good polling methodology, but if you take the "I don't know"s and "no opinions" and count them as "No" votes, 80% could probably be reached. Back in January, a far right sponsored poll came up with these numbers:

Q: There has been discussion of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams relocating to Los Angeles. In order to keep the team in St. Louis, a plan has been proposed to build a new stadium using approximately $500 million in taxpayer funds. Do you support or oppose a plan using $500 million in taxpayer funds to build a new stadium for the St. Louis Rams in order to keep them in St. Louis?

Support……………….18%

Oppose………………..69%

Don’t Know……….…13%

If you take their Oppose (69%) and add them to the Don't Know (13%), you come out with 82%, which is, strictly numerically, within margin of error of the 79% result of the 15th Ward Democrats Poll:



So, then, someone may observe: What does it tell us when a left leaning sponsored poll and a right leaning sponsored poll come up with similar numbers? The skeptic's answer might be: probably nothing because of the 9+ month lapse between polls and the 2 polls are not an apples to apples comparison. Just food for thought.

I wonder if this is taken into consideration by the Aldermen, I'd imagine those who are pushing for a vote would love to use this as a reason.
